In this fanciful, old-fashioned story, a girl visits an elephant at a bleak zoo, where they play elephant games and girl games. The girl is so sad when the elephant is sent to Africa that she goes to visit him there. The watercolor and black-ink illustrations are graceful and spare, but the fantastic elements don't quite gel.
