After he reaches "the heart of cool," he's confident enough to assess whether a skateboarding trick that turns into an accident is cool or not. While the narrative is a bit heavy-handed, the story offers food for thought about being cool and being foolhardy. Meanwhile, Boynton's highly recognizable pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are the ultimate in cool.
