YAElemental Trilogy series.
Iolanthe Seabourne and Prince Titus (The Burning Sky; The Perilous Sea) plan to storm the Bane's stronghold and kill him. If the prophecies are correct, both will die in the attempt. In this trilogy-ender, Thomas sets herself a nearly impossible hurdle--crafting a satisfying story in which both protagonists are fated to die--then clears that hurdle neatly, reversing reader expectations again and again.
