Sent to live with her aloof grandmother for the summer, Franny refuses to accept her father's death and develops an elaborate fantasy life around the fairy characters he created stories about. The novel's ending is weak, but the appealing fairy adventures are described with as much care as Franny's real-life interactions with her grandmother and her household staff.
