Seventeen-year-old Squid and her daughter return to her British Columbia island home for an uneasy reunion with her parents. The McCrae family has endured crippling storms in recent years, including the drowning of Squid's brother, and there's a lot of wreckage lying around. The story sustains a charged atmosphere of blame, guilt, and apprehension, although, in the end, the beauty of nature and the strength of family offer reassurance.
