A sheltered albino girl, half white and half Chinese, kisses a dangerous older boy and naively assumes she is pregnant. Cordelia runs away to Seattle, where she tracks down the boy, boards in a brothel, and finds temporary fame as a (spurious) mind reader. Set in 1918, the novel features intriguing characterizations and a trenchant first-person voice, but the plot relies heavily on coincidence.
