Known for their work in comics, DeMatteis and Ploog have created a hybrid comic book/novel adventure about the fantastical land of Abadazad, which fourteen-year-old Kate enters to search for her brother, Matt. Both author and illustrator are skilled storytellers, but the mixed style diminishes their strengths; the most readable scenes are those told in pure comic-book format, without gimmick.
