(4) PS Illustrated by Gill McLean. When Seth, a snake, says his first word--"Shhhhhhh!"--his noisy animal neighbors think he has a lisp and make fun of him. In fact, Seth is asking them to be quiet; finally realizing this, the animals give him a birthday gift of silence. The illustrations' cutesy, anthropomorphized animals detract only slightly from a story that gently invites discussion.
