Everyone in Noot's Thai village decorates umbrellas with flowers and butterflies; when Noot paints playful elephants on hers, her family tells her to stop. The king, however, approves; in an emotionally satisfying (though abrupt) ending, he names Noot the Umbrella Queen "because she paints from her heart." Linoleum prints with pencil illustrations featuring attractive umbrellas illuminate the setting.
