Samuel and his father find an injured Canada goose on their farm and nurse her back to health. When she and her mate finally resume their southward flight, Samuel is both happy and disappointed, until spring brings their return. Though the text-heavy story's dialogue sounds stilted, the overall tone is as warm as the textured paintings, which shine with a golden autumn glow.
