The trials and tribulations faced by the young of thirteen animals--from ducks to whales to cicadas--are detailed on each double-page spread; a dozen more are mentioned briefly at the book's end. The information covers a range of intriguing behaviors. While the portrayal of fuzzy, smiling animals is at odds with the harsh reality of the topic, the colorful illustrations of adult and baby animals contain excellent detail.
