Jesse, a Navajo teenager, and Carolyn, a privileged Boston transplant, become acquainted on a New Mexico Indian reservation beset by sightings of a "skinwalker," a mythical Navajo witch. The two teens fall in love while trying to crack a mystery that involves a cache of sixteenth-century gold coins that Jesse's grandfather found in his youth. The setting is unique, the characters likable, and the writing style smooth.
