Memer is a child of rape, her unknown father one of the Alds who seized the city of Ansul eighteen years before. The Alds are illiterate book-destroyers who punish the very act of reading. In the end it is Memer who will be the new "Reader" and lead the reclamation of knowledge. This is an artfully written political fable with compelling resonance.
