In this religiously charged story set in the backwoods of early nineteenth-century upstate New York, teenaged Hannah's addled father sells her to two neighboring brutes for a year of service. Hannah, an outsider with one green eye and one white, is a strong, self-sufficient young woman. Stock secondary characters and a bit too much melodrama mar an otherwise intriguingly written novel.
