Horn Book Herald: August 2025

The theme of this month’s Horn Book Herald is graphic novels and comics, which, yes, it still may be useful to say, are considered “real books.” Last month I had the pleasure of talking with Svetlana Chmakova about Awkward at the Boston Public Library, sponsored by the Boston Comic Arts Foundation; and here are some more of the Horn Book’s thoughts on the reliably popular (and sometimes still maligned) format.

We’re introducing a new feature in the Herald. “In Conversation with…” is a sponsored interview with a book creator whose work may be of particular interest to our readers. We’re kicking things off with T.Z. Layton, author of The Academy series (and, as Layton Green, a bestselling adult author), about a twelve-year-old small-town soccer player with big dreams about “the beautiful game.”
