In her second book, Marisol McDonald explores words beginning with M. One M word, however, scares Marisol: "Monster! / ¡Monstruo!" A "BUMP" in the night fills Marisol's mind with worrisome questions. She comes up with a characteristically imaginative answer, then learns the real, not-so-scary cause of the sound. Mixed-media art sparkles with color and personality, matching Marisol's exuberance. The Spanish translation preserves the text's tone nicely. Glos.

Everyone in this industrious nineteenth-century family takes part in preparing for the feast. The little-boy narrator, meanwhile, checks in on all the preparations until the family is finally seated around the table. McElmurry's gouache illustrations are imbued with quiet energy. Miller's patterned rhyming text has the cadence of a folk song and captures just how joyful (and exhausting) Thanksgiving feasts can be.

Color by Lola Moral. Mr. Bartle's sixth graders explore the NYC subway on their way to the Empire State Building. Newcomer and lone wolf Pablo gets on the wrong train; good-natured Alicia follows. This graphic novel's detail-filled art vividly conveys scenes below and above ground. The Spanish translation is more formal than the original English but overall is serviceable. Brief essays and historic photographs appended. Concurrently published in English. Reading list, websites.
