Picture the American Past series.
Short, factual texts and archival duotone photos highlight four groups of children: freed slaves after the Civil War, immigrants at the turn of the century, Dust Bowl victims in the 1930s, and Japanese Americans during World War II. Readers will need additional background knowledge to understand the significance of the historic periods, but these are adequate introductions. Notes to teachers and parents are appended. Bib., glos., ind.

In this well-developed novel, Celia and her mother accompany her ship-captain father on a two-and-a-half-year whaling voyage, which Celia describes in letters to her cousin at home in New Bedford, Massachusetts. During the voyage Celia matures into a brave sailor and navigator and changes from her mother's adversary to a confidante and friend. Whaling information is unobtrusively integrated into the narrative.

Illustrated by
Jennifer Plecas.
In this overly long, slapstick frolic, the farm animals, watched by the disapproving house cat, invade Mr. McDuffel's house when he sets out for town. They dress up, dance, eat, and nap the day away, while a clock on some of the pages shows the passage of time at home and on the road. Expressive pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations and repetitive silly animal sounds in the text create a chaotic mood.
