In part one, she spies on a paint-spattered man; in part two, she follows a woman who renews the same library book each week. Both cases (originally published as separate books in France) resolve poignantly; Cici's struggle to balance sleuthing with friendships adds emotional layers to this luminously illustrated scrapbook-style graphic novel.

(3) 1-3 Tib & Tumtum series. Translated by Carol Klio Burrell. Illustrated by Bannister. Tib, a young caveboy who is teased about the birthmark on his face, makes friends with a shy dinosaur with a similar marking. Of course, Tib has a hard time convincing his tribe that Tumtum is real, seeing as dinosaurs are long-extinct. Suitable for younger comic fans, much of the graphic novel's humor is visual, relayed skillfully in Bannister's lively art.

(4) 1-3 Where's Leopold? series. Translated by Carol Klio Burrell. Illustrated by Vincent Caut. In this French import, Leopold can make his body invisible, but not his clothes. Once he discovers the magic words, he uses his new superpower to do what any little brother would do--play pranks on his sister. Leopold's problem is resolved quickly and with little fanfare; both the text and graphic novel–style art are slapstick. A picture puzzle is appended.
