Pogo has just been accepted to gymnastics camp. But her plans are hindered by her self-employed mother's and stay-at-home father's lack of funds. Typical pre-teen self-involvement is combined with jealousy of her baby stepsister and fear that Mom will lose her business. Though the secondary characters and the family situation are believable, Pogo won't generate much sympaythy among readers.

While her parents are separating, Ivy decides she wants to divorce her mean older sister Lacey. Talks with her gardening friend Susanna and a weekend spent locked in a room with Lacey enable Ivy to reconcile with her sister. Although the dialogue sometimes reads like a case study on feelings associated with divorce, the sisters' relationship is ultimately convincing.

Forced to move from Tampa Bay to Colorado when her parents decide to quit their jobs, buy a farm, and raise alpacas, Laney refuses to unpack, believing her family will give up and move back to Florida. While Creel's use of similes is occasionally forced, both the characters and the story are well developed.
