Time Twisters series.
Illustrated by
Neil Swaab.
When stepsiblings Doc and Abby come face-to-face with time-displaced Abraham Lincoln, it's up to them to fix history. In the new series' second volume, the duo travels back in time to persuade Abigail Adams, who has joined a pirate crew, that being First Lady is not boring. Sheinkin expertly slips in interesting facts and true events. Swaab's black-and-white spot illustrations add to the comedic tone. Review covers these Time Twisters titles: Abigail Adams, Pirate of the Caribbean and Abraham Lincoln, Pro Wrestler.

Offering a front-row seat to the American Revolution, St. George presents an absorbing portrait of a remarkable relationship. In an engaging, direct style and with unstudied respect for her readers, St. George succeeds in humanizing her subjects and in fleshing out complicated social and political events. An inviting design features well-placed and -captioned black-and-white illustrations. Bib.

The verbal formality of the chronologically organized text seems at odds with curious and independent-minded Abigail Adams, who spoke out against the rigidity of her time. Despite the stylized simplicity of Wallner's art, the portraits of Abigail Adams in colonial blues against a muted, stippled pastel background suggest a woman of many moods.
