Pete and Gwen lead the surviving Lost Boys to safety while the effects of the Horologia virus epidemic expand. In this sometimes muddled sequel to Everland, Spinale compounds her dystopic revision of Peter Pan with the addition of Alyssa and other figures borrowed from Carroll's Wonderland. Unexpected alliances and betrayals abound, and everything leads to a poison apple tree inside a magical labyrinth.

Kidnapped by monstrous creatures and transported to brutal Neverland, Gwendolyn is mystified by everything. As Gwen sorts through her attraction to both the Captain and Pan, she encounters dangers everywhere, and truths about her own heritage and power are revealed. Maxwell's Peter Pan adaptation waffles between being a tale of loyalty and a seductive romance, but its dark tone adds appeal.

In post-apocalyptic London, Gwen Darling struggles to protect her siblings from the Marauders, led by Captain Hook. Aided by Pete, who defends a hidden troop of orphans, Gwen learns she and her mother may hold the key to saving the world. Elements of Barrie's famous work frame (at times awkwardly) this series-opener. A creatively constructed adventure tale of survival and family.

Hook's Revenge series.
Illustrated by
John Hendrix.
Captain Jocelyn Hook's difficulty discovering the location of her dead father's treasure hoard is the least of her problems: relations with best friend Roger are rocky; there's betrayal in the crew; and the girl she kidnaps from Peter Pan appears to be her own mother. The real highlight of this second reimagining of Barrie's world is its curmudgeonly narrator's sardonically droll voice.

A delightfully curmudgeonly narrator sets the tone for this fast-paced and witty reimagining of Barrie's Neverland. This time readers see the pirates, mermaids, cannibals, fairies, and Lost Boys through the eyes of thirteen-year-old Jocelyn, Captain Hook's unapologetically energetic daughter, who gleefully escapes finishing school and the horrors of corsets to join Smee in hunting down the infamous crocodile that finished off her father.

Wendy's quest to find her brothers, Michael and John, leads to a secret Pacific cove where homeless surfers live on the fringes of society. Her attraction to both leader Pete and to Jas, who deals a dangerous drug called "fairy dust," creates an intense love triangle. Sheinmel's overt allusions to Barrie eventually yield to an original story about grief and growing up.

Omniscient narrator Tink relates fellow Neverland faerie Tiger Lily's tumultuous, doomed relationship with Peter Pan. Tiger Lily's sometimes muddled characterization makes for an uneven read; however, by (re)creating a luminous, dreamy world with clever appearances by Hook, Wendy, and a hungry crocodile, Anderson's original star-crossed love story will resonate with fans of Barrie's classic.

This picture book employs songs and lines from the Broadway retelling of J. M. Barrie's beloved story. The lyrics are woven into the narrative (not always fluidly), and a link to listen to the songs online is appended; children interested in musicals will relish the opportunity to sing along. Bates's feather-light paintings make this a pretty, appropriately dreamy-looking package.

In this detailed biography, some of the information seems superfluous; the book would have benefited from a more selective, fine-tuned text. However, both the inclusion throughout of well-chosen quotes from Barrie's work and Adams's soft-hued, nicely textured illustrations artfully elaborate upon the text's depiction of how Barrie's early life influenced his eventual creation of Peter Pan.

J. M. Barrie's classic children's story is well suited to Sabuda's active pop-ups; pirates, fairies, and Peter himself literally fly up from the pages. The characters' faces are less accomplished than the paper engineering and the writing pales in comparison to Barrie's colorful storytelling, but the text is somewhat incidental to this volume's dazzling production.
