Zoom In on Native American Leaders series.
These starter biographies offer brief descriptions (with one to three sentences per page) about important Native American figures; historical art and photos as well as contemporary scenic photos accompany the sparse texts. Only very cursory details about each subject is offered, but the series may serve as an adequate introduction for younger readers. Lists of quick stats and key dates are appended. Glos., ind. Review covers these Zoom In on Native American Leaders titles: Chief Joseph, Crazy Horse, Pocahontas, Sacagawea, Sequoyah, and Sitting Bull.

Jim Yellowhawk.
Jimmy McClean is Lakota, but his father is half-Scottish and Jimmy is blonde and blue-eyed. His grandfather, Nyles High Eagle, helps Jimmy understand his native heritage on a modern-day road trip inspired by Crazy Horse's life. Although Jimmy's questions and comments are a clunky device for Grandpa to recount historical and biographical information, the Lakota author offers an authentic voice. Bib., glos.

Wild West series.
This blandly designed volume chronicles conflicts occurring from the 1600s through the 1880s between Native Americans and European settlers. Significant events--including the massacres at Sand Creek and Wounded Knee and battles at Apache Pass and Little Bighorn--are briefly recounted, identifying causes, personalities, and outcomes. Archival photographs accompany the unvarnished portrayal of this shameful period of American history. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.

Native American Chiefs and Warriors series.
These brief biographies of seven legendary Native American leaders strive for historical accuracy but suffer from flat prose and unfortunate choices of cover illustrations. Reluctant readers may be attracted by the short, simply written chapters, which are profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs and reproductions. The books have all been previously published under different titles and a different series name. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.

I Like Biographies! series.
Crazy Horse's childhood, his growth as a hunter and subsequent rise to warrior are all chronicled briefly in this beginner's biography. The sometimes poorly reproduced illustrations add little to this account of the Oglala Sioux and their struggle with and betrayal by the American government. The text is brief; the tone is straightforward, neither apologetic nor accusatory. Reading list, timeline, websites. Glos., ind.

Best of the West Biographies series.
This biography depicts the life and accomplishments of a Native American hero. The factual account, although somewhat romanticized, tells of Crazy Horse's victories, particularly at Fort Phil Kearny and Little Bighorn. Landau briefly discusses the Crazy Horse Memorial sculpture. Illustrations, maps, and archival photographs are included. Reading list, timeline, websites. Glos., ind.

Famous Figures of the American Frontier series.
Despite some oversimplifications, the books in this series provide adequate introductions to these individuals. After acquainting readers with the subject's more colorful accomplishments, succeeding chapters present a biographical sketch. Illustrated with (often colorized) archival photos, the texts are readable and accessible. Timelines are included. There are five other fall 2001 books in this series. [Review covers these titles: Crazy Horse, Davy Crockett, Annie Oakley, Wyatt Earp, Geronimo.]

Illustrated by
S. D. Nelson.
This fictionalized biography covers Crazy Horse's early years. Focusing on his vision quest, in which Crazy Horse sees himself as an invincible leader, Bruchac paints the stoic but brilliant tactician and warrior as a hero. Nelson's acrylics on wooden panels, patterned after children's drawings in ledger books from the Indian boarding schools, are also reminiscent of the figures drawn by Plains Indians. An author's and an illustrator's note are appended.

A & E Biography series.
These biographies offer straightforward information about their subjects in accurate, if adulatory, packages. Illustrated mostly with low-grade black-and-white photos, along with a few color photos, these books generally afford serviceable, well-documented introductions to their subjects. Crazy Horse, Cousteau, and Gandhi contain time lines; Gates, Sagan, and Gandhi contain glossaries. Bib., ind.
