John Holyfield.
In 1837, Lewis, who was born into slavery, became the first African American blacksmith in Chattanooga, Tennessee--and he didn't stop working until he was able to buy the freedom of all his family members. Hubbard's straightforward yet lyrical narrative is effectively illuminated with descriptive passages. Rendered in smoothly textured acrylics, Holyfield's art, with its characteristically elongated images, dramatically conveys a sense of passion and purpose. Bib.

Beginning in 1810, this dense novel imagines the life of Sakakawea's son (born on the Lewis and Clark Expedition). "Adopted" by Clark, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau attends school in St. Louis, travels the world, and experiences life as a man of both Native and French ancestry. Though rich with historical detail, this serious, old-fashioned novel will appeal to only the most dedicated history buffs. Bib.

All three titles humanize their subjects, describe interactions with Native Peoples, and summarize the impact of their expeditions. Glos., ind. Review covers these Explorers titles: The Story of Lewis and Clark, The Story of Magellan, and The Story of Marco Polo.

Zoom In on Pioneering Explorers series.
These three biographies highlight international exploration (Ferdinand Magellan; Marco Polo) and exploration of the American West (Lewis and Clark). The scant introductory volumes, which align to Common Core Standards, raise more questions than answers, but they may spark interest in further research. Paintings, drawings, and stock photographs accompany the mundane texts. Lists of quick stats and key dates are appended. Glos., ind. Review covers the following Zoom In on Pioneering Explorers titles: Ferdinand Magellan, Lewis and Clark, and Marco Polo.

Sterling Biographies series.
Attractive layouts and numerous reproductions of photos, paintings, documents, etc. (e.g., Lewis's pre-expedition shopping list) make for easy-to-approach biographies of four famous explorers. The writing is solid, with sidebars that flesh out historical contexts and important contemporaries. Columbus and Henson give personal portraits; Lewis & Clark reads more like a history of the expedition. Source notes, timeline. Bib., glos., ind. Review covers these Sterling Biographies titles: Christopher Columbus, Lewis & Clark, and Matthew Henson.

Ronald Himler.
This accessible account of the Lewis and Clark expedition begins with a bit of biographical information about both men. For the sake of brevity, the text glosses over the complexities of the mission, and some statements lack context (e.g., west of the Mississippi was "a land of mystery" only to European settlers). The illustrations enhance the text's drama. Reading list, author's note, timeline, websites. Bib.

As if speaking to a live audience, Private Reubin Field tells of his adventures as a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. In this fictionalized account, the energetic storytelling style makes the historical facts lively and immediate; equally vivid illustrations appear every few paragraphs and suggest a sketchbook of the young private's journey. Step into Reading series.
Illustrated by
John Manders.
This short book explains Lewis and Clark's capture of a prairie dog to send home to President Jefferson. Redmond keeps the tone light, and the cartoony illustrations add humor; it appears the trip was fun for all. This is an easy-to-read introduction to the Lewis and Clark story, but even very young readers will figure out the explorers most likely drowned almost an entire prairie dog town to capture just one.

This dense, methodical novel credibly relates the story of the expedition through the eyes of both Sacajawea and William Clark. The dual narration, which includes excerpts from Clark's journal and retellings of Native myths, is set within the larger framework of a narrative presented by Sacajawea's son. This unwieldy structure, along with the book's slow pace, may impede readers.
