(4) YA Beginning in 1810, this dense novel imagines the life of Sakakawea's son (born on the Lewis and Clark Expedition). "Adopted" by Clark, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau attends school in St. Louis, travels the world, and experiences life as a man of both Native and French ancestry. Though rich with historical detail, this serious, old-fashioned novel will appeal to only the most dedicated history buffs. Bib.

(4) K-3 Step into Reading series. Illustrated by John Manders. This short book explains Lewis and Clark's capture of a prairie dog to send home to President Jefferson. Redmond keeps the tone light, and the cartoony illustrations add humor; it appears the trip was fun for all. This is an easy-to-read introduction to the Lewis and Clark story, but even very young readers will figure out the explorers most likely drowned almost an entire prairie dog town to capture just one.

(4) YA This dense, methodical novel credibly relates the story of the expedition through the eyes of both Sacajawea and William Clark. The dual narration, which includes excerpts from Clark's journal and retellings of Native myths, is set within the larger framework of a narrative presented by Sacajawea's son. This unwieldy structure, along with the book's slow pace, may impede readers.
