In this second engaging graphic novel (spun-off from the long-running sci-fi series), android Iko risks everything to protect her friend, Lunar Queen Cinder, from Lysander Steele's bioengineered wolf-soldiers. Meyer also compellingly weaves in discussion of nature versus nurture as Iko struggles with revelations concerning her humanity. Dialogue and action blend seamlessly across Gilpin's monochrome-blue panels, allowing fans to savor this reunion with all their favorite characters.

This first graphic novel of the continuing sci-fi series sets up female android Iko's mission to track down the remaining wolf-hybrid soldiers threatening the peace between Earth and Luna. Over seven chapters, illustrated in a monochrome blue palette with dynamic panels, Meyer skillfully reintroduces her pre-established world with appearances by familiar characters (including Cinder, Cress, and Thorne) while establishing a new heroine in Iko.

Devoted fans will gobble up these nine short stories (five previously unpublished) featuring many of the series' characters. Most of the entries are prequels to existing story lines, filling in the backstories of Cinder, Wolf, Thorne, et al.; the final story, "Something Old, Something New," takes readers beyond the events of the final book, culminating in a fan-pleasing royal engagement.

With echoes of Snow White, this prequel to the other sci-fi fairy-tale retellings in the series explains how Levana came to be such a wicked queen and sets up Cinder's backstory for readers in the know. Though the ambitious and often-deluded royal never quite becomes likable, insights into her character awaken sympathy. A well-told, page-turning story with payoff for series followers.

Meyer stays true to her characters--sci-fi revisionings of Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and here, with damaged Lunar princess Winter, Snow White--as she builds to this series-ender's climax: an epic battle between evil Queen Levana's army and cyborg Cinder's motley crew of allies. Loyal fans will appreciate how Meyer ties up every loose end--romantic, political, folkloric, and otherwise.

Meyer's fairy-tale/sci-fi hybrid series (Cinder; Scarlet) continues with a "Rapunzel"-inspired story. Cress was taken from her Lunar parents as a baby and forced to live alone on a satellite. But her real loyalty lies with cyborg Cinder, who plans to protect Earth by dethroning Levana. Balanced nicely with Cress's story is Cinder's continuing journey. This multilayered, action-packed page-turner is sure to please series fans.

With no memory of her life before becoming a cyborg, teenage Linh Cinder (who lives with her stepmother and two stepsisters) is forced to earn the family's living as a mechanic. Her life changes after an encounter with New Beijing's Prince Kai. Meyer ingeniously incorporates key elements of the fairy tale into this sci-fi Cinderella story.
