An appealing mixture of classic and contemporary verse about food and eating is gathered together in this picture book collection of rhymes. Appropriately silly and entertaining, all the verses lend themselves to joyful recitation. Colorful, animated illustrations of kids coping with the exigencies of eating enliven the text.

Though Fyleman (1877–1957) was best known for poems about fairies, the poems here are, instead, gently silly, appealing as much through sound as through sense. Most concern odd characters, like the pirate who "...always when he went to sea / Drank turtle soup instead of tea." Bandlow matches the tone with vibrantly animated, agreeably childlike illustrations.

In these retellings of Mexican folktales, humans interact with supernatural beings, and good eclipses evil. Religious figures, including the Virgin Mary, predominate. The fifteen stories vary in length from five lines to several pages, and detailed source notes are appended. The acrylic illustrations highlight key elements from each tale and re-create the vibrant, contrasting colors of Mexican folk art. Bib.

Philip draws from a range of sources for this small-sized collection of fifty-eight prayers and poems. The major world faiths are represented, including Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, and Judaism, as well as Native American religions. Many of the selections are well known. Brent's delicate, detailed watercolor borders are edged in gold and give a traditional, formal feel to the volume. There is no table of contents or index.

This is a delightful collection of poems about bathtime by American, British, and Caribbean poets. The poems range from the traditional ("Miss Susie Had a Baby") to more contemporary ("Granny Granny, Please Comb My Hair"). Many feature childlike imagery, such as the comparison of a bathtub to an aquarium in "The Tub." Henley's bright illustrations are appropriate for the intended age group.
