With the ever-growing character list seemingly solidified, the relentless action in this volume drives the story to its conclusion. Still, some characters do have time for personal growth, which is a pleasant change from prior entries in the series.

The focus here is on the children who have summoned the fallen Great Beasts who caused the Great War. Familiar characters provide continuity with prior books, with each tale providing backstory. The stories' brevity doesn't allow for much character growth, but Spirit Animals devotees won't be disappointed.

Told in the form of several vignettes, we see him at different points during his life and during the war in Erdas. The focus on one character's motivations, strengths, and weaknesses is a refreshing change from the varied perspectives and group dynamics in the series' previous volumes.
