Lauren Stringer.
This picture book biography of Wright is sensibly limited to two themes--geometry and nature--tracing how Wright's early childhood, spent playing in forests and building with geometric blocks, was the foundation of his illustrious career. Going writes lovingly and rhythmically but avoids a tone of hero-worship. Stringer's warm, accessible pictures show Wright at various stages of life against backdrops that nod to his designs. Bib.

LeUyen Pham.
This romantic picture-book account details the conception, design, and construction of the Frank Lloyd Wright house Fallingwater in Pennsylvania. The prose is by turns straightforward, staccato, and lyrical. Readers may recognize Pham's usual visual style in the cartoony human figures, but elsewhere the watercolor, ink, and gouache art channels Wright's clean design and its unique, organic harmony with nature. Adkins isn't stingy with praise for "the most imaginative artist with walls and roofs and windows and doors anyone has ever seen." But he's also quick to point out Wright's egotism, dishonesty, and political naiveté, while chronicling the architect's childhood, marriages, love affairs, and prolific seventy-three-year career. Like the other biographies in this stand-out series, it's a balanced, thoughtful, well-researched portrait. Bib., ind.

Raintree Biographies series.
Plentiful reproductions of the work of each subject contribute to the cluttered design of the dryly written profiles. Each two-page section focuses on an aspect of the artist's life, and sidebars provide quotations from the artists themselves as well as cultural and artistic context. Although superficial, these books give readers a basic understanding of these pivotal figures. Timeline, reading list. Glos., ind. [Review covers these Raintree Biographies titles: Edward Hopper, Frank Lloyd Wright, Michelangelo, Pablo Picasso, Dorothea Lange, and Maya Lin.]

Creative Lives series.
The books in this series effectively relate the cultural relevance of these two subjects and don't shy away from depicting unflattering or controversial events in each artist's personal life. Sidebars provide relevant quotations and historical context. Ample photographs (and in Picasso, reproductions of paintings) enliven the text, but the busy page design is distracting. Each book includes a timeline. Bib., glos., ind. [Review covers these titles: Frank Lloyd Wright and Pablo Picasso.]

People to Know series.
This biography dutifully records the details of Wright's life and career--from his tempestuous romances and overspending to his achievements in designing the Guggenheim Museum and the homes Fallingwater and Taliesin. Beyond the adequate documentation, the architect fails to come alive as a dynamic individual. The volume is illustrated with black-and-white photographs. A time line is included. Bib., ind.
