A first-person narrative and a combination of color and black-and-white photos depict twelve-year-old figure skater Emily Hughes training, spending time with friends and family (which includes older sister, Olympic gold-medalist Sarah Hughes), and performing an exhibition at Madison Square Garden. The layout is busy and some photos are dark, but the book captures the fun and dedication of being an amateur athlete.

Eve and her horse Lightning compete in shows, ride on the trail, and help teach riding lessons. Spontaneous black-and-white and color photos capture the bond between horse and girl and reveal more about Eve than the undistinguished text does. The information offered is generally accurate, though safety practices are neglected in some photographs.

Feldman uses color photos to tell the story of McKenzie Foster, a seven-year-old gymnast who hopes to eventually enter the Olympics. Narrated from the gymnast's perspective, the text describes Foster's family life, practice routines, participation in competitions, and dreams for the future. Together the text and photos capture a young athlete's dedication and enthusiasm.

Clear black-and-white and color photos are accompanied by a thirteen-year-old ballet dancer's first-person narration. The work needed to become a professional dancer is included, but the motivation to work--the joy of dancing--is absent. Both text and photos emphasize the costumes and the glamour of being a dancer, providing an incomplete but nevertheless alluring picture.
