“They were the candy time forgot. / They did not mold. / They did not rot.” When leftover candy corn get a whiff of Christmas, they want in on the action. “They stuffed the stockings. / Clogged the nog. / Scampered o’er the yuletide log.” The traditional decorations and delicacies aren’t happy with the chaos, and a ticked-off candy cane declares: “You had YOUR holiday. / Now scram!” Fenske’s gleefully busy illustrations and rollicking rhymes make an already absurd situation even funnier. Santa helps the disgruntled treat see that there’s room for all sticky, sweet, and striped candies, even if they’ve been sitting on the shelf since October.
