Sixteen-year-old Jed is contacted by a mysterious girl who claims that Jed's father is having an extramarital affair with her mother. Jed's first-person narrative presents a realistic, acutely observed portrait of a family torn apart by infidelity. It is only in the last few chapters, when events take an over-dramatic and somewhat macabre turn, that the story becomes less than convincing.
