Ira's Shakespeare Dream

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Floyd Cooper. Armand narrates how Ira Aldridge, an African American aspiring actor, left New York City at age seventeen in 1824 and became acclaimed throughout Europe for his performances in Shakespeare's plays (most notably for his role as Othello). Cooper's oil-wash illustrations with kneaded erasures in tones of sepia, amber, and brown cast the powerful story in a soft, warm light. Bib.
