Baldwin, James

Little Man, Little Man: A Story of Childhood

(2) 4-6 Illustrated by Yoran Cazac. Edited by Nicholas Boggs and Jennifer Devere Brody. This edition of Baldwin's 1976 "child's story for adults" about little boy TJ's day-to-day adventures on his Harlem block includes a foreword by Baldwin's nephew, an afterword by Baldwin's niece, and a context-setting introduction by Baldwin scholars: "This experimental, illustrated literary work...confounded readers at the time." While not for four-year-olds (TJ's age), this slice-of-life portrait of an African American community, with loose, evocative illustrations, may appeal to mirrors-and-windows-seeking middle graders and up.
