Lord of the Cranes: A Chinese Tale

(3) K-3 Translated by J. Alison James. Illustrated by Jian Jiang Chen. When the Lord of the Cranes disguises himself as a beggar to test people's kindness he finds only one man, an innkeeper, who will offer him food. In gratitude, he brings to life a painting of three dancing cranes, thus ensuring the inn's fame and prosperity. A note about the symbolism of the crane in Chinese tradition would have enhanced the book, whose vivid paintings contain authentic details.
