My Havana: Memories of a Cuban Boyhood

(3) 4-6 Illustrated by Peter Ferguson. With Secundino Fernandez. Dino's family emigrates from Cuba to New York City when Fidel Castro takes power. The boy, overcome with homesickness, copes with his new surroundings by creating sketches of his beloved Havana. Wells's authentic-sounding first-person narration (with her subject's help) describes architect Secundino Fernandez's childhood. Ferguson's lush oil paintings reflect the story's emphasis on place and imagination.
