Sammy Keyes and the Search for Snake Eyes

(2) 4-6 A scared teenage girl approaches Sammy at the mall, handing her a heavy shopping bag and promising to return. Inside is a baby. When the young mother fails to return, the seventh-grade sleuth sets about solving another mystery, plunging into the gritty subculture of Mexican-American street gangs. It's heavy stuff, but Sammy's irrepressible personality and wry first-person voice prevent the story from becoming too bleak.
