The Dancing Pig

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Jesse Sweetwater. In this folktale from Bali, two sisters kidnapped by an ogress are saved by a dancing pig (think Miss Piggy in a sarong), a motley crew of frog musicians, and a talking mouse. Told with an easy repetition reminiscent of an Indonesian gamelan, the story comes with a glossary and pronunciation guide. Fitting for the Balinese setting, the vivid colors and strong patterns of the artwork resemble a simplified form of batik.
