The Girl Who Named Pluto: The Story of Venetia Burney

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Elizabeth Haidle. In 1930 London, intellectually curious child Venetia Burney (1918–2009) likens a cold and dark newly discovered planet to god Pluto's underworld. Her name suggestion, via her grandfather, reaches astronomers at Arizona's Lowell Observatory, who unanimously vote to adopt it. The book's illustrations are gray as a British winter, except for flashes of maroon signifying inquisitiveness. An author's note clearly separates fact from conjecture and concludes with a modern connection. Bib.
