The Storyteller's Beads

(3) 4-6 Sahay, a Kemant girl, and Rahel, a blind Jewish girl, escape their native Ethiopia during the famine and warfare of the 1980s. Initially suspicious and fearful of each other, the two are bound in friendship as they make a dangerous journey across the desert and eventually resettle in Jerusalem. The novel presents an involving portrait of Ethiopian culture through the eyes of two well-defined characters.
