The Very Boastful Kangaroo

(4) K-3 A kangaroo braggart beats all comers in a jumping contest until the smallest joey bets that she can "jump higher than that tree." She wins, of course, because "trees can't jump!" Although the ending, in which the boastful kangaroo laughs at himself with the others, strikes a false chord, the repetitive text, relatively easy language, and the subject matter are appropriate for beginning readers. The story is illustrated with simple, flat drawings.
