This story covers familiar bases--a historical setting, plenty of wealth, predictable romantic entanglements, and glamorous fashion. However, its protagonist, Sophie, with a minor physical disability and a talent for magic, is unusual. Warmly wrought relationships between Sophie and her female friends and mentors help make this portrait of a young lady's debut amid the disruptions of the Napoleonic era pleasantly diverting.
