This second volume about best friends Winnie the possum and Ernst the otter features four new adventures revolving around, respectively, a trip to the beach, a different way of looking at the stars, a baby-sitting disaster, and a genteel poetry contest that ends in a fight. Both the text and the small-scale images set against white backdrops are amusing and endearing.

Four episodic stories introduce Winnie and Ernst, best friends who search for a lost birthday present, create a nut loaf for a bake sale, throw a garden party, and endure some unlucky fallout after breaking a mirror. Although lacking in character development, these stories chronicle a pleasant chain of events, visually repeated through bright illustrations that create context clues for beginning readers.

When Beto's family celebrates the Day of the Dead, he can't think of anything to put on the altar for his late grandmother. Then in a dream his grandmother reminds him what is most important to her--Beto! The story includes many colorful details and Spanish words that draw the reader into the setting, and the vibrantly toned, busy illustrations are full of movement.

Naty is positively giddy about participating in the Mexican festival of Guelaguetza. While marching in costume with the other "puppet people," she is temporarily lost in the city streets. The slim plot is a fine scaffolding for the fluorescent, mural-like illustrations and the lively text laced with Spanish words and phrases. The end result is an enjoyable introduction to this Mexican tradition.
