The young narrator describes the "dogs and their people" she encounters on her strolls: sometimes both are young, sometimes both are old, some resemble each other, some couldn't look more different, etc. In a nifty twist, at book's end the narrator goes home to her...cat. The dapper art shows the humans in garb that suggests an earlier, foppish era.
