Ali helps rescue horses Wind Dancer and Misty from serious neglect, but many problems--their potential refeeding syndrome, Ali's veteran brother suffering from unacknowledged PTSD, and recurring memories of her own horse trauma--complicate the recovery. Authentic horse details, Ali's developing relationships, and a brisk plot add interest, but stilted dialogue and tidy resolutions lessen the appeal.

Following her mother's death while racing an Arabian named Astra, Lily's father forbids her to ride. When Astra contracts colic, Lily pleads for the horse's life, and Astra's owner gives her the mare. Although the didactic writing and emotional framework are clunky (readers are reminded every few pages of Lily's feelings), the comprehensive depiction of endurance racing will attract horse lovers.

When a fire on their remote Nevada ranch destroys the barn, Jessica's family agrees to accept vacationers--"dudes"--to pay for repairs. Jessica is put out when a snooty guest wants to buy Storm Chaser, the horse Jessica has been training (against her father's orders). Wordy and melodramatic, the story nevertheless rewards horse lovers through its descriptions of training techniques.

Random House Riders series.
Disabled teenager Katie saves a crippled colt, nurses him back to health, and eventually makes him a racing champion. The author, drawing on her own background and career as a jockey, infuses the story with accurate, exciting descriptions of horses, horse care, and competition in the show ring and on the racetrack. The story is predictable but will be enjoyed by girls who love horses.
