Illustrated by
Thomas Locker.
In a quiet story, a grandfather tells the story of his parents' first winter homesteading in Colorado. Harsh storms compel them to fell for firewood all but one of the nearby spruce trees, home to a family of geese. A break in the weather on Christmas saves the tree and the geese; later, his father carves a nest of geese to place in the tree every Christmas. Elegantly composed oil paintings contrast the winter landscapes with cozy interiors of the cabin.
