Religion, an often neglected topic in young adult fiction, is the focus of this uneven collection focusing on various faiths, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism. M. E. Kerr contributes a strong father-son story, and Jennifer Armstrong sustains a distinctive voice in the otherwise slight "The Martyrdom of Monica Macallister." But many of the other efforts in this overlong anthology strain at the demands of the short story form.
