Gardner shares his dad's philosophy that you should follow your dream, but as his sister tells him, "You and Dad have a problem in the focusing and following-through departments." Though Gardner and his recently laid-off dad have lots of questions about their lives, the friendship between them is unquestionable, and Powell's characterization of the psychic pleasures as well as malaise of both generations is perceptive and responsive to each.
