Levelheaded Stella Madison is torn between the comfortable and the new. Work at Mom's restaurant or expand her own resumé? Chow on Double Whoppers or beef bourguignon? Stay with devoted boyfriend or go for flirtatious new guy? Stella's tell-all voice is consistent and likable. Her foodie parents' increasingly strained relationship adds further dimension to the story.

Freshman year brings changes for Lucy Doyle. Her older brother moves back home with his girlfriend, who ends up sharing Lucy's room. Lucy's first romance with a cute upperclassman is appropriately myopic, as she and her friends analyze each look for hidden meaning. More serious changes are gracefully managed in Lucy's understanding family, allowing her to linger in the protected waters of her gentle sexual awakening.

Bridget's narrating voice has snap, and the novel is well observed, but a key plot point--Bridget leads Jasper to believe that Benji is alive--strains credibility and patience.
