Step-by-step instructions and serviceable illustrations for thirty-two recipes are divided into four sections: "Holidays," "For Special People," "Seasons," and "Just for Fun." Bakers will appreciate having an excuse to bake (eat) such delicacies as Groundhog Day cookies. Some recipes may require special equipment, such as two different sizes of star cookie cutters, others include helpful tips on how to gift-wrap the treats.

(3) 4-6 Kids Can Do It series. Illustrated by June Bradford. This needlework handbook offers both general instructions and specific craft ideas. Despite the careful directions, beginners are bound to need adult assistance, but the projects--embellishing a pair of jeans, making an ornament, and sewing and decorating a pouch for CDs, to name a few--are appealing. The illustrations and well-planned design make the book easy to use.

An introduction to each project describes required tools and sewing materials and provides directions for basic stitches; a final section explains how to assemble the quilt blocks to finish the pieces. The color images, including photos of the completed projects, make following the instructions easier, but beginning quilters will need assistance.

(4) 4-6 Kids Can Do It series. Illustrated by June Bradford. Here are recipes for dozens of treats to give as gifts, from herb mixes and soups to gingerbread cookies, fudge, and chocolates. Although a tight design often crowds the directions, each recipe is joined by a small color photo, drawing, and suggestions for unique and attractive gift packaging. The recipes and wrapping crafts don't describe required skill levels, but the gift ideas are nifty.

(4) 4-6 Illustrated by June Bradford. The author includes the basics of appliqué, hand stitching, and quilting with instructions for ten sewing projects in this attractive but difficult book. Step-by-step directions are at times hard to follow and even older children will need adult help going from the illustrations of a sewing stitch to the real thing. The book will be most useful for children already familiar with the basics of hand sewing who are looking for project ideas.
