"Each meal was full of Christmas cheer, / With treats and sweets to spare." What happens when Santa returns to one family's house on New Year's Eve (he really liked their Christmas cookies) and doesn't leave? And then his extended family and pets show up, too? This story imagines the almost-year-long celebration/intrusion. It's festive fun at first (mostly to the young narrator, not to her parents), but eventually only Santa and his gang are enjoying it. Kaban's energetic cartoon illustrations, featuring a creative problem-solving Black girl in an interracial family, capture the over-the-top premise, making the most of the hilarious chaos.

Illustrated by
Eda Kaban.
An adorable new baby sister leaves African American Mya feeling overlooked. A school project might just be the perfect opportunity for the now-middle child to distinguish herself. Meanwhile, Mya is also in the middle when her besties, twins Skye and Starr, become close with Mya's estranged friend, Naomi. The quirky, relatable Texas girl's third story probes the evolution of family and friendship with compassion and heart.

In this charming follow-up to Old MacDonald Had a Truck, the farm's mister and missus use an electric saw ("With a BUZZ BUZZ here and a BUZZ BUZZ there"), a hammer ("BANG BANG"), and more to spruce up an old boat and build a ramp for the book's grand finale. The art teems with farm animals, many of them unexpectedly handy--and dexterous on water skis.

"BLUE is for girls. And boys. / And uniforms on a team." Pearlman gives each of the introductory-crayon-box colors a gender-neutralizing treatment; in the corresponding illustrations, Kaban shows a girl and a boy happily interacting (e.g., playing baseball). The book is persuasive: by the time young readers hear "All the colors are for EVERYONE" at the end, that point should seem obvious.

Magnificent Mya Tibbs series.
Illustrated by
Eda Kaban.
Mya has competing priorities: spending quality time with her mom before the birth of a baby sibling, studying so she beats her rival at a school quiz competition, and making the best-tasting chili in Bluebonnet's annual cook-off. Mya's personality is big as ever; folksy language, fast-paced drama, and gently offered lessons on family and friendship make this second installment about the African American cowgirl a winner.

A young boy makes generous promises to his baby brother: he will comfort the baby when he cries; he'll share his toys as well as his mom and dad; they'll have adventures together; they'll be friends. The retro-looking illustrations expand humorously on the understated text, showing the brothers on imaginative adventures, with the baby comically clad as a pilot, rock star, ninja, and more.

Instead of causing destruction, a bevy of (invented) superheroes redirects its unhappiness to more constructive pursuits: "They burn angry steam off with speed-of-light hiking / or super-Xtreme outer space mountain biking." Some of the rhymes could use a super-mechanic, but the anger-management angle is inspired. Kaban's digitally created cast and settings have the look of animated cartoons.
