After six prodigious high-school hackers are tricked into creating an apocalyptic computer virus, they must set aside their disparate backgrounds to hack into a giant company and undo the damage they caused. At times the reliance on tropes makes the characters and plot feel a bit shallow, but the breakneck pace and enjoyable banter ensure an entertaining ride throughout.

Illustrated by
Ana Aranda.
Three nervous goats decide to prevent the hungry chupacabra from eating them by offering it silly things to swallow instead. Aranda's vibrant watercolor and gouache illustrations turn a potentially scary story into a colorful romp, though the enjoyably absurd scenario is limited by the attempt to have all the potential foods sound similar to chupacabra (candelabra, cucaracha, etc.).

Allie has never won anything, despite belonging to a family of intense overachievers. When she learns about a creative competition at her school, she becomes determined to win it, no matter the cost. The comically dramatic first-person voice and lovably flawed characters keep the moral about friendship from becoming clichéd, instead turning it into an optimistic, relatable unifying theme.

Cici: A Fairy's Tale series.
Illustrated by
Tyler Page
&
Cori Doerrfeld.
While dealing with her parents' divorce, Cici learns that she is a fairy and must decide whether to keep her powers. This graphic novel with a Latina main character deals well with the pain of divorce. Though the logic behind the fantasy elements is shaky, the expressive illustrations are at their best when portraying Cici's friends and family as she sees them--with animal attributes.

This bilingual edition includes Spanish text alongside the original English. The cheerily packed spreads (à la Richard Scarry) focus on a mixed-race family (and pet alligator) going about the day in a bustling, refreshingly diverse neighborhood. Most word choices are familiar, with some unconventional terms (e.g., "hearing aid loop sign"; "geodesic dome") making appearances.
